Which pillow for which sleeping position?
The right choice of pillow is a decisive factor for healthy sleep and is very often underestimated. In addition to the orthopaedic aspects of the correct cervical spine position, there are also factors such as cosiness and climate regulation. From an orthopaedic point of view, a pillow should accommodate the head and, as far as possible, naturally reflect the cervical vertebrae. However, as the neck area is a rather small, limited area, it is often difficult to position the head well and personal preferences are often counterproductive (e.g. ... my head should lie high). Then it is important to determine your actual sleeping position. Tension in the neck and shoulder area in the morning can be an indication of the wrong head position, caused by an unsuitable pillow.
PRONE POSITION
In the prone position, your pillow should not be thick, but rather thin, so that you do not overstretch your cervical spine and make life difficult for the intervertebral discs.
LATERAL POSITION
In the side position, the distance between the resting head and shoulder must be bridged by the pillow so that it is not overstretched.
BACK POSITION
In the back position, a flatter pillow is usually advisable from an orthopaedic point of view.
